  • VB at Michigan Invitational

Panther volleyball begins the 2016 season in Ann Arbor this weekend at the Michigan Invitational. Tournament Central

First match is against the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks, this afternoon (Fri. 8/26/16) at 3:30pm (CDT). I don't believe there is any radio or webstream coverage for this one, but live stats should be available via StatBroadcast or Gametracker

    Miami (Ohio) -- 2015 Record: 21-10, 12-4 Mid-American
The RedHawks return 11 letterwinners and six starters plus a libero from last year's squad that finished third in the Mid-Atlantic Conference. This season, however, Miami was tabbed the preseason favorite to take home the MAC regular-season and tournament titles. Averaging 2.63 kills per set at a 3.42 attack average, the RedHawks will look to senior middle blocker Paige Hill to guide the veteran offense.

I gather Heid's move from libero to hitter is permanent?

      Re: VB at Michigan Invitational

Held played all 6 positions in spring ball, but I was out of town last week so I didn't see their Purple and Gold scrimmage. Bobbi was on OPR the other day and said that they had been experimenting with a number of different lineups this fall, and hadn't yet settled in on any particular one yet.

It probably depends on how the fresh(wo)men (who redshirted last season, and/or some of the new class) perform.

Panthers win the first set over the Redhawks, 25-17, hitting an efficient .324 in attack %.
They used the same lineup from much of last year, with Hook (setter), Held, Weber, Haneline, Schulz, and Thomas. Sorge played libero and Sinnot subbed in at times.

UNI wins the 2nd set 25-19, and complete the sweep with a 25-17 victory in the third.

In addition to Sinnot, Blanchfield saw some time on the floor, and true freshman Karlie Taylor made an impressive debut in the third set notching 3 kills on 4 attempts (coming off an ankle sprain in camp).

Kayla Haneline led all players with 10 kills and a solo block. Amie Held added 9 kills, 2 service aces and a solo block. Bre Weber (15 digs) and Kendyl Sorge (13 digs) led the defensive stats.

And it hasn't exactly been a good day for the MVC in general:

                  SIU over Central Michigan 3-0

                  Xavier over Missouri State 3-2
Iowa State over Wichita State 3-0

Illinois State is playing at #21 Loyola-Marymount tonight

UNI wins the first set over SLU, 25-20.
Was a close back-and-forth set, but the Panthers pulled away at the end.

Panthers take the second set fairly easily, 25-14
Billikens had quite a few errors, and UNI had some strong serving and a good block at times

SLU took control of the third set early, but Ashlee Sinnott's serving lead UNI on a 13-1 run to give the Panthers a 25-17 set win, and another 3-0 match sweep.

Kayla Haneline had a great match, recording 12 kills, hitting .588, and adding 3 blocks.
Bre Weber notched 11 kills, Amie Held added 10 kills.
