Default Iowa Hawkeye items at a Dome Tailgate

I am wonder how the rest of Panther Nation feels about seeing Iowa Hawkeye along with other non UNI school's tailgating equipment (Easy Ups, Chairs, ect) at the Dome. It seemed to me to be at an all time high at the Drake game.

While I don't care for it, if an Iowa fan is spending money on UNI tickets instead of Iowa tickets that's a good thing in my book.

Also how do we know they were Drake people using this, I doubt they even would make Drake items like this, as the demand would be so low

Personally it drives me nuts when people attend an event and wear colors of a totally unrelated team.

Agreed. It makes people look like dolts - at least just wear a regular t-shirt, polo, or sweatshirt.

Way back when, I remember seeing two guys who always used to wear Houston Oilers gear to every game (?) Maybe they slept in it, I don't know.

Anyway, don't wear another college's colors to a game - it just looks stupid.

I live in Iowa City and attend family tailgates here on occasion. Even though I am not a Hawkeye fan, it wouldn't be right to wear UNI gear to an Iowa tailgate. I will either wear some of my husband's Iowa stuff, or more likely, just generic non-descriptive clothes.

The same should go for UNI tailgates. My husband wears purple and gold or generic stuff when we go up to the Dome, even though he's a Hawkeye.

Well said. I agree on both circumstances.

I bring uni stuff to Iowa tailgates and vice versa occasionally. It's just not practical to buy two of everything.

I don't think anyone wants to restrict anything, lord knows we don't need any more tailgating "Rules".

I for one find it classless and disrespectful but that's just my opinion. On the other hand I feel freedom of speech is a pretty cool thing and would not suggest we take that away from anyone.

It used to drive me crazy. Now, I'm just happy they've decided to attend the event. If we want them to fully join Panther Nation, we should be welcoming the casual or "fringe" fan who is dipping a toe into the water to see if they want to come back again. We want/need them to come back again.

Seems like a nice opportunity for University Book and Supply (or someone) to set up a booth in the tailgate area, so's they can buy a Panther shirt or hat or flag to fly.

Perhaps a sponsor would cover the cost of Panther shirts or hats for the converted ... of course, they would need to turn over their shirt or hat in exchange.

I wear UNI shirts to pretty much every sporting event I attend. It's better to get the name out there. Was at the IA vs. ISU tailgate and had a number of people ask why I was wearing the shirt. "I just want to support the best football team in the state" was my automatic answer.
I, however, do not like it when PantherHOK fans wear their rainbow of HOK color shirts to UNI events. #1 I think that if you are going to an event to cheer for a team, you should wear the shirt to support the team. #2 If you are a true Hok fan, (then you didn't graduate high school - KaBoom) then you should know that your colors are black and gold - not teal and white. Hate it when any "fan" wears non-school colors (except special occasions like St Pat's green or Cancer awareness Pink).

There was a t-shirt exchange by the basketball team today.

Netten: "Tshirt exchange TODAY at 11AM....Maucker Union!!! Get a UNI basketball shirt"

Can I trade in a 10 year old UNI t-shirt for a new one at one of those exchanges? Maybe I could cross off UNI and write in Iowa with a magic marker.

Agreed. UNI fans (and teams) should definitely not wear black.

And here you go, from KWWL:

"CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -
Students at the University of Northern Iowa are being asked to take their black or red shirts off -- in exchange for something more purple.

As Lucas Willett found out, his Iowa shirt was a target.

"Just woke up late for class and threw something on," he explained when asked about his shirt. "Wasn't really thinking."

Basketball coach Ben Jacobson and wrestling coach Doug Schwab exchanged Willet's Iowa shirt for a UNI shirt."

I can't believe what I'm reading in the comments. But I also wonder how accurate some reports of this are - I think a radio story on this in the Des Moines area might have made it seem a little different as friends said it made UNI seem whiny. People aren't taking it in the fun, drum-up-school-spirit way it's meant to be about. I mean any intelligent person should know that the university itself is NOT enacting some sort of dress code policy on tshirts! It's for fun. I think Schwab's comment about burning them, or the comment about sending them back to Iowa/ISU is what's getting this story out of control. The charity donation is the more likely route anyway. But would anyone cry foul and go balistic if this were Iowa offering students to trade in their ISU tshirts? I don't think so. But because it's UNI people think it's awful. I just don't get it. School spirit is fine everywhere else but complain about it and try to do something about it at UNI and suddenly "we're" (yes, I'm totally and proudly including myself in all this even though I had nothing to do with this tshirt exchange) doing something silly and awful. Does not make sense. It's just fun for crying out loud!

Schwab's line about making them into diapers for kids overseas who don't have diapers gave me the best laugh I've had in a while.

What's funny is that's actually a charity. My mom's church makes cloth diapers out of old tshirts and sends them in care packages over to third world countries. They're cute! Imagine babies overseas wearing UNI on their butt-I've seen some made like that.

Having just skimmed the comments, I don't see what the big deal is. I've certainly read a lot more anti-Iowa garbage on PN than any of the white-bread, bland comments in the article. Read some of the people here, and you would assume anything to do with the U of I is fascist, and that all U of I students are Hitler youth.

You definitely have to fault KWWL for implying that this is a compulsory rule on campus and not a voluntary exchange. Poor job on their part as well as some of the readers who lack common sense and a 6th grade reading comprehension

I wore a light blue shirt when I went tailgating in Ames for the ISU v. Iowa game. Every other person I met, whether a stranger or not, asked me why I was wearing a non-red/yellow/black shirt. Who the F--- cares the color of my neutral shirt?! Just give me a damn beer!

I should've just been "that guy" and worn UNI gear. I actually saw a decent amount of it when out and about.

Leave it to Rick Coleman to take a subtle jab at UNI, heaven forbid anyone talks against iowa hawkeyes. It's a great idea, the coaches are interacting with the students and are very respectful. Some people are unbelievable...
