Correct, but guess which one has a far better system in place to attract higher level talent. Answer: Fred. Why? Because Iowa high school basketball isn't exactly overflowing with BCS level ballplayers. Recruiting and talent wins in college sports. Fred's system fits perfectly with the type of upper level (not elite) out of state ballplayers coming to his program. I'm not a fan of ISU, but give credit where credit is due. Basketball is a sport about making plays, not running plays. Fred gets that.

Also, no offense to Dubuque, but I don't remember a whole bunch of D1 signees coming from that town. By "whole bunch", I mean some EVERY year in football AND basketball. Not one every few years in one or the other. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that Senior team that everyone thought was loaded...isn't the player who committed to us the only D1 kid on that team? I very easily could be missing someone, but if all of those guys signed with DII schools, that isn't exactly "loaded". Also, no offense to DII basketball, I'm just comparing Dubuque and Iowa against the upper end towns and states for production of talent.

The state of Iowa always has and always will produce and number of quality high school basketball players every year that are capable of playing D1. In all honesty this has be a pretty lean year. However, the state just do to sheer numbers can't produce the number of D1 athletes that other states like Illinois are able to.

That would be a pretty silly coaching philosophy to follow. Let's please not turn this into a "hey yeah, Fran's such an @$$hole" discussion. We already know the answer to that question but this has nothing to do with it.

To your last point, correct, it's apples and oranges. But, I'm also not willing to give semi-equal status to Joe's Computer Shop in Cedar Rapids when comparing them to IBM. Numbers are numbers, and unarguable.

To your first point, if a number of guys were capable of playing D1 basketball, then why don't they sign? Not just a few, but a "number" as you put it. Recruiting in basketball if a FAR more exact science than it is in football. In football, you can have Kurt Warners, Bryce Paups, and Jim Kliensassers (a nod to Lakes) slip through the cracks of higher level teams' recruiting. In basketball that happens so rarely that it's the true definition of one-off. I don't mean to be too harsh on Iowa HS basketball, just trying to point out some facts as a basis of comparison between Iowa and elsewhere.

No, I believe Fran wasn't going to offer somebody that has already committed to UNI, which makes more sense. Otherwise, let's just offer everyone that Fran offers so nobody can come to iowa.

I think the example was about Lohaus. Had he not been committed to UNI, I really think he would have offered him with the recruiting luck that Fran has had.

I don't think he said that, if he did it was crazy, of course other schools including Iowa are going to offer kids we've offered. Hell, some schools seem to do little else in the way of recruiting. Maybe he said Fran wouldn't offer a player who had already verbaled to UNI.

Oops, when I posted that I thought it was right under AC's post. I missed that a new page had started.

Looks like my bad. That's what happens when I try to post things from memory, rather than going back to read it again. Not offering our commits makes more sense. Sorry for the mistake.

it would appear as though a complete lack of common sense contributed as well.

I will correct you then. Haber is going to play basketball at Brown and LeGrand will playing football for Iowa next year as well. That was three D1 and a DII in the starting lineup.

As I said, I could've easily missed something. Let me also correct you, since we're talking basketball, a guy with a FB scholly does not count. So, that's two D1 players. That's impressive for an Iowa high school, but also not the norm.

You specifically brought up football in that post and I was just correcting you as you asked. Just because an athlete picks to play D1 football doesn't make the team less loaded athletically. Typically Dubuque has D1 athletes each year. Specifically, one basketball player this year and the next 2 years as well.

Ryan Kriener will be in visiting again soon. He also picked up an offer from South Dakota State. Although I am not sure why he has him listed as a guard since I most places have him listed as 6'8'' PF

I'd be shocked if Kriener didn't end up here. He's been going for an offer.

Indiana State has now offered Ryan Kriener and Wali Parks (IC West) per Iowa Preps Twitter. Kriener is switching high schools to Spirit Lake high school this fall. Wali Parks only averaged 2.1 ppg as a sophomore for IC West which tells you something about how good IC West was last year.

One of my former coaching colleagues attended the Spirit Lake vs Hull Western game before Xmas. Jake, Fran, coaches from Wisc. U. and other major universities were in attendance. Fran spent his time signing autographs. Hull Western drilled Spirit Lake with Kriener not impressive at all. My friend said if that was to be Kriener's audition game then it was a failure.

Kriener may have been sick that nite or my thinking is that Hull Western is that good. My friend was not impressed.

I'm sure he is a good player but I did not find those videos to be impressive. Seems a little slow and lacks explosiveness.

Keep in mind guys that this video was probably from this past Summer at the latest. He has 2 years of HS ball before enrolling in college (where he may or may not RS his first year). I think big guys are hard to project out too far to most people. That's why recruiting is such an in exact science and hundreds of athletes transfer each year b/c there were unmet expectations in the player's eyes.

Steffon Mitchell is a guest at the WSU game today. 6'5" small forward from Minnesota. Not a lot of great offers so far, but a late bloomer?? Seems like he's getting more high major attention, recently.
