COX NAMED TO DIRECT FUTURE STARS ILLINOIS OPERATIONS
Des Moines, Iowa --- Future Stars has named former Springfield High School and University of Northern Iowa basketball standout and assistant coach Jonothan Cox to the position of Illinois Director of Operations for Future Stars Sports.
Cox, 37, replaces Tom Allen in the direction of Illinois operations of Future Stars camps and shootouts in Illinois, as well as Future Stars/ASI (Ambassador Sports International) spring and summer travel teams in Illinois.
Cox is a 1986 graduate of Springfield High School where he was named a fourth team all-stater by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association, lettered in four sports, and used that as a springboard to a storied four year career at the University of Northern Iowa, serving as team captain his last two seasons and leading the Panthers to their historic first NCAA Tournament berth, and a 77-74 first round upset of Missouri. Cox went on to coach at Springfield High as freshman head coach and varsity assistant, and then was an assistant on the Wabash Valley Junior College squad ranked number one in NJCAA Division II. In 1996, Cox joined the staff of Eldon Miller at the University of Northern Iowa.
Future Stars president Mark McLaughlin, in announcing the hiring, indicated that Cox brought an impeccable list of credentials to the table in assuming the position.
“Jon has been involved with Future Stars for nearly ten years as a camp coach, evaluator, Director of Camps, and finally as overall Director of Events as named earlier this fall.” McLaughlin said. “Coach Cox has a remarkable ability to speak to and work with high school players, coaches, parents, and the college coaching community in accessing the avenues players need to get that next level look.”
“He has an impeccable reputation for integrity and a passion for working with young men and women.” McLaughlin said. “He will represent us, the state of Illinois, and our players with the highest standard of excellence, and he will treat players with respect and dignity, and will work hard for them with high school and college coaches.”
Cox’s role is to plan, staff and direct all Future Stars shootout and camp events conducted in the state of Illinois, to direct and coordinate the recruiting, try-out process, and invitation process for signing players for spring and summer travel teams, and to work with players, coaches and their parents as the liason for maximizing their recruitability and options after high school. He will work with established Illinois travel team coaches Scott Morels of Moline, Ken Meisner of Clinton, Orlandus Thomas of Chicago and Jim Spratt of Oregon who have committed to work as Illinois team coaches and assistant directors in the state.
Cox, currently working as an advisor in the College of Business at the University of Northern Iowa, stated his reasons for taking the job, and goals he has set for advancing Future Stars organizationally in Illinois.
“I’ve been fortunate in my life to be afforded a lot of different opportunities through the game of basketball. “ Cox said. “Direction of the state of Illinois in all Future Stars and Future Stars team programs means that I can provide student-athletes the access they need both to the recruiting process, and opportunities to be exposed to college coaches.”
McLaughlin noted that Cox is a person known to college coaches across the Midwest, and is someone they trust for input on potential prospects.
“I can’t point to an individual we’ve worked with this side of Van Coleman who has more credibility in the college coaching community, with the ability to relate to the individual athlete like Jon does.” McLaughlin said. “ I feel like players in the state of Illinois have found a new, old friend with the ability to encourage, teach, mentor and change lives through the game of basketball…Jon is exceptional.”
Players, coaches and parents may contact Cox at (319) 504-6484 during business hours or email him at [email protected] for program information or if interested in staffing, participating or competing as a Future Stars program athlete.
