  • UNI vb 2014

the volleyball team hosts a spring "tournament" this Saturday in the WRC, scrimmaging a number of teams from around the midwest.

and I just noticed the schedule for next fall was posted on unipanthers.com (of course, it is still subject to change, but I like seeing it, regardless)

Looks like the Panthers are slated to open the season at Saint Louis University tournament on Aug. 29-30 (though no other teams have been announced quite yet).

The following weekend (Sept. 5-6), they'll participate in a rather formidable tournament at Kentucky, playing the Wildcats, Creighton, and Southern California. All three opponents won at least one match in the NCAA tournament last season (Creighton and Kentucky made it to the second round, while USC made the quarterfinals)

Then there is a Tues. night home match against Northern Illinois on 9/9, followed by a tournament at Notre Dame Sept. 12-13, taking on the Fighting Irish, TCU, and Northeastern.

Rounding out the non-conference schedule is a home match against Iowa State on Wed. 9/24, which is later than usual for that match AND would make 2 years in a row where the match is played in CF. UNI is also slated to travel to Brookings for a match at SDSU on Tues. 10/21

Jay, do you have any idea of who are coming in as freshmen next season? I believe we lost 2 to graduation, and one transferred out.

no clue, I've never really followed recruiting that much.
I know a couple of ladies from Dike-New Hartford have committed to UNI (OH Briana Weber, and S Rachel Koop) as well as Kendyl Sorge (L, Janesville). But I don't know if they are coming in this fall or next year, or what.

I hadn't even heard of the player transferring out

I have heard from the PN poster Animal Man (I think that's what it is) that Amanda Bries has transferred to Iowa State.

And it looks as if those ladies you listed are juniors this year. But it's promising that 2 of them made the elite all state list

Kendyl Sorge is a Jr. at Janesville so she will not be with the program until after next May.

Courtney Kenzil is also transferring, most likely to Marquette.

Why are 2 starters transferring? Its so rare to see girls transfer from Bobbi's program...let alone 2 that I believe started or played significant PT.
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.

Amanda Bries - giving up VB to pursue a Dietian program @ IA. State (only program in IA)
Courtney Kinzel - she felt she wasn't no longer a good fit for UNI VB (I think there might be more to it but don't know details) I have my own ideas...

Transferring seems to have become more and more prevalent in college VB. (or maybe it has been for a while and I'm just noticing it more the past few years).

If CK goes to Marquette, she'll be joining a program who just got a new (to them) head coach, as their previous coach (Bond Shymansky) left to take over the Iowa program, so MU hired Ryan Theis who had been at Ohio.

Transferring is more prevalent in all college sports. I personally think that the kids coming into college have such a delusional picture of themselves and there abilities that it is difficult for some of them to take coaching, and criticism in order to get better. I am not saying that this is the case with CK, but overall I think that if something is too difficult or if there is a little adversity then the answer that these kids see is to run away.

that might be the case in some situations. Or for other transfers, it might be the case that they just don't feel the proper fit/chemistry with a particular team or coach. Or they think that they could make a better contribution to a different program (and/or that their particular skills could be better utilized elsewhere). Or circumstances change throughout the course of their 5-ish years as a collegiate student athlete.

Outside the realm of sports, there are plenty of instances where a student will enroll in a particular class, and end up decided that that particular class or teacher did not suit them, so they end up dropping the class. Is that b/c they have a delusional picture of themselves and their abilities?

That could be somewhat accurate. I do believe that there are many athletes who are babied or have had to deal with little to no adversity in their careers. I also believe that recruiting is becoming more and more important and in many cases the coaches do/say anything they can (legally) to sign student athletes. Then, when the athlete arrives on campus they find out that the coach(es) aren't the same bubbly, pleasant, happy person they were during the recruiting process. Also, let's not forget just how damn competitive it is at the D1 level. There is very little that separates these athletes. They are the best of the best. Some rise to the occasion better than others.
